Nantucket Island: A Day Trip From Hyannis
If you're planning a trip to Cape Cod, a day trip to Nantucket Island should definitely be on your itinerary. I recently had the pleasure of exploring this charming island, and it was an experience I won't soon forget. I stayed at the Plaza Hotel in Hyannis, a convenient spot to begin my journey, and I’m excited to share all the details, including tips and a one-day itinerary, to help you make the most of your visit.
Where I Stayed: The Plaza Hotel, Hyannis
I chose to stay at the Plaza Hotel in Hyannis, a perfect location for anyone looking to explore Cape Cod and the nearby islands. The hotel offers comfortable accommodations and is close to the ferry terminal. You can book your stay at the Plaza Hotel here.
Getting to the Ferry
Parking near the ferry terminal can be challenging, especially since the nearby lot only allows six hours of parking. To avoid the hassle, I opted for an Uber ride, which was both convenient and stress-free. If you're planning a trip, I recommend doing the same to start your day off right.
The Ferry Ride: Hyline Cruises
I booked a high-speed ferry with Hyline Cruises, which also offered an optional bus tour around the island. The ferry ride was smooth and quick, and I highly recommend reserving your seat in advance. You can book your ferry tickets here.
The ferry ride to Nantucket was a delightful experience, offering a smooth and scenic journey across the sparkling waters of Nantucket Sound. As the high-speed ferry glided through the waves, the crisp sea breeze and panoramic views of the coastline created a sense of anticipation. The modern, comfortable seating allowed for relaxation, while the open-air deck provided the perfect spot to take in the stunning surroundings. As we approached the island, the iconic Brant Point Lighthouse came into view, signaling the start of an unforgettable adventure on Nantucket.
Exploring Nantucket Island
First things first. Let;s talk about the beauty and the fashion. This is what I would expect landing on a famous island like Nantucket. Before I even arrived at the island i knew from the ferry that style would abound. Nantucket is a place where timeless charm meets coastal elegance, and from the moment you step off the ferry, you're enveloped in its beauty and quaintness. The cobblestone streets are lined with historic homes adorned with weathered shingles and blooming hydrangeas, giving the island an almost storybook feel. Everywhere you look, there’s a sense of understated luxury that is effortlessly chic. The fashion on the island reflects this vibe, with visitors dressed in stylish yet comfortable attire. Shades of blue and white dominate the scene, from crisp linen shirts to breezy sundresses, perfectly complementing the island’s nautical heritage. It’s clear that while everyone is relaxed, they’ve also paid attention to their style. I did not know the preferred color but i came pretty close in my teal. My dress was the toast of the day. I got a million compliments on it. If you’re planning a visit, take a cue from the locals and pack outfits that are both fashionable and functional—think soft fabrics, classic stripes, and a touch of maritime flair.
Breakfast at Lemon Press
After disembarking the ferry, I stopped at Lemon Press, a local favorite for breakfast. Their fresh, organic offerings were the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty meal or something light, Lemon Press has something for everyone.
I was running late for the bus tour so I grabbed my breakfast to go and I hopped on the tour bus which i booked with the ferry. You will see the option in your shopping cart when you go to pay for the ferry. The tour took us through the picturesque countryside of Nantucket, with stops at some of the island’s most iconic spots, including a famous lighthouse. The natural beauty of the island is truly breathtaking, with rolling hills, pristine beaches, and charming historic homes. This tour is 2.5 hours. If you are not a nature lover do the one hour tour.
One of the highlights of the tour was learning about the rich African American history on the island. Nantucket has a deep and significant history as a whaling hub, and African Americans played a crucial role in this industry. The African Meeting House, now a national heritage site and museum, offers an insightful look into this history. The museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in the cultural heritage of Nantucket. There was no lighthouse stop included in this tour but all the passengers on the bus were clamoring for one so the guide drove us to one of the famous lighthouses.
Beach and Bar: A Perfect Combo
After the tour, I headed to one of Nantucket’s beautiful beaches to relax and soak up the sun. . . actually I took a taxi to the beach but I was only there for the views. The sun was on 100 that day. The beach is perfect for sunbathers, and there’s even a nearby bar where you can enjoy a cool drink after a day of exploring.
After the beach I went to the famous ice-cream shop to see what the fuss was about. The line was not going around the block as it usually is. The ice-cream was actually really delicious. I always forget the flavor I get but my please might not be yours so try your own…it’s ice-cream…you cant go wrong. After that it was almost time to catch the ferry. I chose a ferry time that would see me back on Cape Cod early since the ferry ride is very long.

Unlocking Europe: Essential Tips for North American Travelers
Introduction:
Traveling to Europe is an exhilarating experience that promises a captivating blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty. Unlike North America, Europe offers travelers a mosaic of languages, cuisines, and architectural wonders within relatively small distances. As you embark on your European adventure, understanding key differences between North America and Europe, along with essential travel tips, will not only enrich your journey but also ensure a seamless and memorable exploration of this diverse continent. From navigating transportation systems to embracing cultural nuances, preparing for your European travels involves embracing a world of discovery and adventure.
1. Cultural Diversity and Language: Europe boasts a rich tapestry of cultures and languages within relatively small geographical distances. Unlike North America, where English predominantly prevails, Europe is home to numerous languages such as French, German, Spanish, Italian, and more. Familiarize yourself with basic phrases in the local language to facilitate communication and show respect for local customs.
2. Transportation and Infrastructure: Public transportation networks in Europe are often extensive, efficient, and well-connected, making it easy to travel between cities and countries via trains, buses, and metros. Unlike North America, where reliance on cars is more common, Europeans tend to utilize public transit systems for their daily commutes and travel needs. Prioritize understanding the local transportation system to navigate cities smoothly and cost-effectively.
3. Historical and Architectural Heritage: Europe boasts a wealth of historical landmarks, museums, and architectural marvels spanning various periods, from ancient civilizations to modern times. Unlike North America, where historical sites may be relatively recent, Europe's history dates back millennia, offering travelers the opportunity to immerse themselves in centuries-old culture and heritage. Research popular attractions beforehand to prioritize visits and gain a deeper appreciation for Europe's rich history.
4. Culinary Diversity and Dining Etiquette: European cuisine varies significantly from region to region, with each country offering its unique flavors, ingredients, and culinary traditions. Unlike North America, where portion sizes may be larger and dining styles more casual, European dining experiences often emphasize quality over quantity and may include multiple courses. Familiarize yourself with local dining customs and etiquette to fully enjoy the gastronomic delights Europe has to offer.
5. Currency and Payment Methods: While many European countries use the euro as their official currency, others maintain their national currencies, such as the British pound, Swiss franc, or Swedish krona. Unlike North America, where credit and debit cards are widely accepted, some European establishments may prefer cash payments, especially in smaller towns or rural areas. Carry a mix of cash and cards, and be prepared to exchange currency or withdraw cash from ATMs as needed.
Understanding these key differences between North America and Europe will enhance your travel experience and help you navigate the diverse landscapes, cultures, and customs that the continent has to offer.
6. Passport and Visa Requirements: Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Europe and research visa requirements for the countries you plan to visit. Unlike North America, where citizens often have freedom of movement within the continent, European travel may require visas for certain nationalities or longer stays.
7. Health Insurance and Medical Care: While North America has its healthcare system, Europe's healthcare systems vary by country, with some offering universal coverage and others requiring private insurance or payment for services. Consider purchasing travel insurance that includes medical coverage to protect against unexpected healthcare expenses during your trip.
8. Tipping Culture: Tipping practices in Europe differ from those in North America. In many European countries, gratuities are included in the bill, and additional tipping is not obligatory. However, rounding up the bill or leaving a small tip for exceptional service is appreciated in some places. Familiarize yourself with tipping customs in the countries you visit to avoid cultural misunderstandings.
9. Voltage and Electrical Outlets: Europe operates on a different voltage and electrical outlet system than North America. Most European countries use 220-240 volts, whereas North America uses 110-120 volts. Additionally, European outlets typically have two round pins, which may require adapters for North American electronics. One thing I did not know was that the UK uses a different type of pin that the rest of Europe. This round pin DOES NOT apply to England, Scotland, Ireland et al. Pack appropriate adapters and voltage converters to charge your devices safely. You can purchase adapters from home, on Amazon. I made the mistake of forgetting to unplug my laptop overnight. I woke to find it dead though it was on the charger all night. I almost panicked because I thought it burned/burnt out and died. Fortunately it came back on after much vigorous prayer. Lol
10. Safety and Security: While Europe is generally safe for travelers, it's essential to remain vigilant, especially in crowded tourist areas where pickpocketing and petty theft may occur. Unlike North America, where gun violence is a concern in some regions, Europe tends to have stricter gun control laws, but terrorism remains a potential threat in some urban centers. Stay informed about local safety advisories and exercise caution when exploring unfamiliar surroundings. You could be a victim of scams, like “sign a petition to protect baby dolphins” or other endangered species, or your luggage could be stolen straight from your hotel lobby by what our tour guide describes as “a well-dressed” man. Stay woke. Normally a cross body bag or waist bag is good but do not use the ones with the quick snaps. Use the new anti-theft 2024 bags You can also loop your waist bag through your belt loop so its not easily snatched if unlocked. Do not carry anything important in your back pocket.
By considering these additional tips, you can better prepare for your European journey and ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience.
Title: Exploring the Emerald Isle: A Journey through Dublin, Kilkenny, Glendalough and Belfast
It all begins with an idea.
Introduction:
Going on a trip to Ireland is akin to stepping into a storybook where lush landscapes, historic ruins, and warm hospitality intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. Recently, I had the privilege of exploring four captivating destinations in the heart of Ireland - Dublin, Kilkenny, Belfast, and the ancient ruins of Glendalough. Join me as I recount the enchanting experiences and unforgettable moments that defined my Irish adventure and share my mistakes so you can avoid them and offer tips to help you make the most of your trip
Dublin: Where History and Modernity Collide
My journey began in Dublin, the vibrant capital of Ireland. The city effortlessly blends its rich history with a modern, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Strolling through the cobblestone streets of Temple Bar, I was captivated by the lively pubs, street performers, and the overall sense of conviviality that defines the city's spirit.
A visit to Trinity College and the Book of Kells exhibition offered a glimpse into Ireland's literary legacy. The intricately illuminated manuscript, dating back to the 9th century, is a testament to the country's deep-rooted cultural heritage. Dublin Castle and St. Patrick's Cathedral provided further insights into the nation's storied past.
Kilkenny: A Medieval Gem
Next on my itinerary was Kilkenny, a picturesque medieval city known for its well-preserved architecture and charming atmosphere. The majestic Kilkenny Castle, with its sprawling gardens and imposing towers, is a testament to the city's medieval past. Exploring the castle's rooms and learning about its history was a captivating journey through time.
Wandering through the narrow lanes of Kilkenny's Medieval Mile, I discovered quaint shops, traditional pubs, and artisanal boutiques.
Belfast: A City of Resilience and Renewal
My Irish adventure continued in Belfast, a city that has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. The Titanic Belfast museum offered a poignant look into the city's industrial history and the tragic sinking of the Titanic. The interactive exhibits and the iconic Titanic Quarter served as a reminder of Belfast's resilience and determination to forge a new identity.
Exploring the murals of Belfast provided a glimpse into the city's complex political history. The vibrant street art serves as a powerful medium for expressing the hopes, challenges, and aspirations of the local community. It must e noted that Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland and is not considered a part of the Republic of Ireland but rather, a part of the United Kingdom. They speak British English a use the British Pound Sterling.
Glendalough Ruins: Echoes of Ancient Ireland
My journey through Ireland culminated in the serene beauty of Glendalough, an ancient monastic site nestled amidst the Wicklow Mountains. The ruins of Glendalough, with their weathered stone walls and towering round tower, spoke volumes about Ireland's rich spiritual heritage.
Wandering through the moss-covered gravestones and the remnants of monastic buildings, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence for the monks who once called this place home. The tranquil beauty of Glendalough's lakes and forests offered a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life, inviting contemplation and reflection.
Conclusion:
My trip to Dublin, Kilkenny, Belfast, and Glendalough was a tapestry of experiences woven together by the warmth of the Irish people, the beauty of the landscapes, and the rich tapestry of history and culture. Each destination offered its unique charm, leaving me with a deep appreciation for the Emerald Isle. Whether savoring a pint of Guinness in Dublin, exploring medieval streets in Kilkenny, delving into Belfast's resilience, or pondering the ancient ruins of Glendalough, Ireland offered a journey that will remain etched in my memory forever.
REGRETS:
My only regrets of visiting Ireland are, I didn’t get to see the Cliffs of Moher, I did not get to visit the countryside, I spent Too much time in Dublin and I regret that I did not know about the TEA BUS while I was there.
CAUTIONARY TALE:
WEATHER
It can rain, sleet or storm all in one hour. It can be very windy on a regular day. If rain is in the forecast, just ignore it. The rain could be over in 20 minutes.
BOOKING
If you book a vacation package, take note to book the hotel for the date the flight will land and not from the flight date. Many flights are overnight and with the 5 hour time difference you will miss one night of your hotel booking and the room can be cancelled with NO REFUND. Book separately for the flight and hotel if you can. Shop around to see if the fares are cheaper when separated.
TOURS
Book tours before you go. GETYOURGUIDE.COM has good tours. Check them out. If you are going for the nature, fly into Shannon airport. The flights are cheaper and shorter.
